Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, emphasizes the importance of maintaining a healthy routine as a key component of overall wellness. The term Āyurveda is composed of two words, āyus, "life" or "longevity", and veda, "knowledge", translated as "knowledge of longevity or "knowledge of life and longevity". In Ayurveda, a healthy routine is referred to as a "dinacharya," which translates to "daily routine." The concept of dinacharya is based on the principle that a daily routine that is in harmony with nature and the body's natural rhythms can promote good health and prevent disease.
Ayurveda recognizes that every individual is unique and that each person's body has its own natural rhythms and cycles. Therefore, the ideal daily routine may vary from person to person. However, there are some general guidelines that can be followed to establish a healthy routine. A healthy routine leads to overall better skin, stronger hair and better internal health. This is critical to reduce hair fall, lesser hair loss and improve hair growth naturally.
The first step in establishing a healthy routine is to wake up early in the morning, ideally before sunrise. Ayurveda teaches that the period between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m. is known as the "Brahma Muhurta" and is considered the most auspicious time of day for spiritual practices and meditation. Waking up early allows us to align ourselves with the natural rhythms of the universe and start our day on a positive note. If waking this early is not possible due to rigours of modern lifestyle, then at least try and wake up an hour before your usual time and use the time for yourself.
After waking up, it is important to cleanse the body through practices such as meditation, pranayama etc. Try and include techniques like tongue scraping, oil pulling, and dry brushing. These practices help remove toxins and promote oral hygiene, which is considered essential for overall health in Ayurveda.
Next, it is recommended to engage in some form of physical activity, such as yoga, stretching, or walking. This helps to stimulate the body's energy and metabolism, improve circulation, and promote overall wellbeing. A well energised body is important for ensuring that your hair and skin, both glow.
Following physical activity, it is time for breakfast, which should be a balanced meal consisting of whole grains, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Ayurveda recommends avoiding processed foods and sugary snacks, which can disrupt the body's natural rhythms and lead to imbalances. Excess of tea and coffee can also be avoided.
Throughout the day, it is important to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and other fluids. Healthy fluids are chaas, fresh vegetable juices , nimbu pani etc. Dinner should be light and eaten around sunset. Avoid a heavy meal just before sleeping as it is difficult to digest.
In the evening, it is important to wind down and prepare for a good night's sleep. Try and avoid screen time at least two hours before sleep.
